Heart disease is quite a serious condition and it can in severe circumstances, be fatal. So just what are the causes of heart disease and are they preventable?

Unfortunately heart disease can be caused by a number of factors and it does range in severity from person to person. Some people may find that they only develop high blood pressure, whilst others could have more serious symptoms such as a stroke or heart attack. Some of the most common causes of heart disease include:
Smoking is not only bad for the lungs, but it is also bad for the heart too. Many people do not realize this, but smoking actually increases your chance of developing heart disease quite a lot. This is simply because smoking tightens up major arteries, it raises blood pressure and it also increases your heart rate. This forces the heart to work a lot harder than it normally would, therefore it increases the risk of heart problems.
So, cutting out smoking would be a great start to ensuring that you keep a healthy heart. Obesity can also be another cause of heart disease and that is because of a few different factors. One of those factors includes the fact that obesity often leads to Diabetes Type 2 – another contributor towards heart disease. Another factor includes that the heart has a lot more pressure on it if you are overweight, as does all of your other organs. This causes the heart to work harder and that is where problems occur.
It is thought that you are also at a higher risk if you are a man. It seems that heart disease tends to affect mainly males, though that changes with women who have been through the menopause. Once you have been through the menopause, you are at a higher risk of developing the condition. So, it seems that there are quite a few different contributing factors to heart disease and many of them are lifestyle choices. That makes it easier to prevent the condition as you can choose to stop smoking and you can choose to partake in regular exercise and eat less.
Obviously you cannot stop the fact that your gender may be a problem, but overall if you keep yourself healthy you should be ok. Another thing to take into account is your family history. Is there a history of the condition within the family? If so that might be a cause of heart disease for you.
